Body Image Presentation

This presentation was developed for parents of pre-adolescents and adolescents. It is also relevant for other adults who work with children, such as teachers and coaches. It consists of two parts:

  1. Short video and discussion
  2. Student workshop

The information that will be shared is very enlightening and pertains to both genders. We will focus not only on an individual’s body image, but also the body image of their family and friends. When parents and teens are more aware of how to maintain a healthy lifestyle, they can also help guide those around them. Detecting unusual behavior early on can help prevent a problem before it fully develops by bringing it to the attention of a professional.

During adolescence, it is common for teenagers to develop negative body images and unhealthy eating habits. Being aware as a parent will help you understand and support your child in making the right decisions.

The presentation will cover the following topics:

  1. What body image is and common examples of how it affects us all
  2. Factors that influence body image
    • The “ideal” look for women and men over the years
    • Effects of the media
    • Puberty
    • Teasing and harassment
    • Friends
    • Sports
  3. Why dieting is unhealthy
  4. Adults as role models (reconsidering our personal attitudes and biases to help our children)
  5. Tips for helping kids develop positive self-esteem, healthy eating habits and an active lifestyle
  6. How schools can help too
